I was thrilled - and honored - to be included in Marlene Oddie's blog hop celebrating the release of her new book with AQS, You Can Quilt. She planned it out so well, sending out reminders, scheduling each chapter's review/highlights with each blogger. And....well, I completely let her down. I lost track of days, and as I was preparing for another 4 day tour of Souther Georgia (not as "glamorous" as it sounds - strictly work, work, work.......and no at-home time) and packing my bag, I looked at the calendar - and realized my post was due TODAY (today being Monday, October 12th). Yikes!
Were my blocks made? Ummmm.....no. I did get the last quilt for Market finished - or at least the top completed so I could drop it off on my way back INTO town at the end of the week. But no blocks - no pictures - no blog post. So that's my story about why I missed my date. No good excuse. My apologies for the gap in the hop. So let's get to it! FYI - please excuse the quality of the pictures. I took them with my phone in the hotel room - so not the greatest light or quality!
My chapter in her terrific book: half square triangles - or HSTs. I do so love HSTs. They are so versatile. Reasonably easy (which I need), quick to piece, and a major component of so many different quilt blocks.
The book itself is wonderful. The directions are clear and easy to follow. And each block offers another piecing method or tip to help you make each block a success. So make oneblock from each chapter, or make them all. You will definitely have a great grasp of the full range of piecing!
As I was working on these blocks, I was reminded of a wonderful Christmas years ago (ahem....many years ago!). I was six. My favorite uncle gave me this terrific yellow truck that made wonderful engine noises when you pushed the level in the bed of the truck. I remember happily playing "construction worker" for months and months after that, pushing my big yellow construction truck around, and putting together buildings with my brother's Lincoln Logs (remember those?) and building blocks.
I was looking at the individual units, stacked on the desk in the hotel room - and that brought the happy hours of playing construction worker back to me. Putting a quilt block together is like creating a building from building blocks, or putting a puzzle together. It is all in how you combine the individual pieces - and the possibilities are endless.
I made all three blocks from the Half Square Triangle chapter, using the soft colors from the Florida Oranges line from Island Batik*. To see the full range of the line, check out my newsletter next week. I'll be giving a sneak peek of new patterns for release at Fall Market featuring the same line. But for this project, the soft colors created soft blocks, a nice contrast to the sharp geometric lines common in HST blocks.
And what do you do with three 12" blocks? I thought they would make a charming table runner. So just a bit of sashing and a simple border and - ta da - an easy table runner.
I do hope you'll check out Marlene's book, and continue on to theother bloggers' posts featuring other blocks and projects from her book (click on the AQS icon). Don't forget to enter the Rafflecopter drawing for prizes too!
