One of the joys of being an Island Batik Ambassador is the (totally unnecessary) excuse to constantly play with batiks - and this month's challenge is no different. I LOVE paper piecing - and hopefully you do too! What I have discovered is that paper piecing, much like chocolate, is something most folks either love or hate. Very few are in the camp of take it or leave it.
Here's my fun little paper piecing project! I combined Fat Quarter Gypsy's awesome Pop Ups with my Autumn Breeze pattern - and look what happened. A bright, springy (pardon the pun - pop ups do just that - pop up to hold pretty much anything!) take on the fall leaves in Autumn Breeze, and a bit of personalization to the easy to stitch Pop Up pattern. And....you guessed it....the leaves are paper pieced!
One drawback to paper piecing is that it's messy. You have a lot of weird size scraps and odd little pieces left over. But heck, you have that with a lot of piecing - so not exactly a deal breaker, right? But....on the flip side, it does allow for all sorts of odd angles and wonderfully sharp points in your piecing. Pretty terrific! And if the pattern is pretty straight forward (like my she says super modestly pretty awesome leaf pattern), then in almost no time, you have some great blocks to plug in to your project - like the pop up.
Oh - and a quick tip. I mentioned a few weeks ago in a FB post about using the postcard trick, and someone asked about it. I'll be doing a FB Live video soon on it (so check the schedule on my Facebook page!), but in the meantime, here are some still shots about the postcard trick.
Stitch along a seam line in the paper piecing pattern.
Lay a postcard along the seam line just stitched.
Using the postcard as a guide, fold along the stitched line.
Trim 1/4" away from the folded edge.
Turn over and match your next piece along the trimmed edge.
And that's the post card trick. No more guessing where the seam line is. No more missing the line, or going over too much. This will make your next paper piecing project a breeze - an Autumn Breeze. Oh, c'mon - you know I had to go there!
