Block Five - Adventure Quilt A Road Trip Quilt Along

Wow - what an adventure this has been so far!  We are almost halfway through our road trip, and what fun, amazing blocks we've been stitching up!

This week's block is Traveler - celebrating the traveler in each of us.  To me, this is often what I feel like as a traveler.  Caught up in an awesome, often amazing, frequently hectic whirlwind of new experiences and exciting adventures.  Sometimes spinning off in unexpected directions, sometimes going where the wind may blow me.  Whew - what fun, am I right?

Block Four - Adventure Quilt A Road Trip Quilt Along

 

Another week - and another block!  This week's block is the Great Divide - and I think you can see where the name comes from, am I right?  If you said it was inspired by the Continental Divide, you'd be right!

I first saw the Continental Divide (live and in person) a few years ago, standing at the top of a mountain, about to ski down the other side.  I'll never forget the majestic sight.  I felt so small, so minor, and so very awed by the sheer majesty, scope, size and beauty of our wonderful country.  The air was crisp and quiet, the snow so white, the sky so blue - and the mountains seemed to stretch forever.  

This week you get the chance to create your own Continental Divide with two different size Delectable Mountain blocks!

Your fabric pull this week?  Background (of course!), Dark Purple, Purple, Very Dark Green, Dark Green and Medium Dark Green.

Block Three - Adventure Quilt - A Road Trip Quilt Along

Oh my goodness - where has the time gone?  We are ALREADY at Week Three!  Gasp!  So how is it going, quilting friends?  Are you having fun honing your skills, working with awesome fabrics, and stitching away?

This week's block is Bloom - because when the weather's warm and the sun is shining, we often see those amazing roadside blooms that somehow manage to not only exist, but thrive, without constant tending.  I don't know about you, but that fact ALWAYS amazes me!

 

What do you need for this week's block?  Besides the instructions <grin>!  

You'll be working with your background, dark gold, light gold, dark red, dark coral, light coral and green.  Don't remember which is which?  Pull out your handy dandy Color Chart!  Whew - that thing is a life saver, am I right?!

Block Two - Adventure Quilt....A Road Trip Quilt Along

And we are off on our Road Trip adventure!  Woohoo!  I LOVE a good road trip.  A great playlist, a few awesome audio books,  some yummy snacks, good friends, and amazing scenery along the way....what could be better?

Mile by mile, the road stretches on and brings exciting new sites.  That is the inspiration for the Milemarker block - a tribute to those miles, marked by landmarks big and small.  Can you really resist stopping for a quick selfie with the world's largest peanut?  Of course not!

In case you missed earlier posts, I'm doing my version in (naturally!) irresistible Island Batiks Foundations (their basics line), and my background is a crisp light blue called Icicle (it even looks a bit icy here!).  It really lets all of the other colors shine, which a great feature to consider when choosing a background that has to work with 24 other colors....and you want something other than the standard white or black.

The Milemarker block gives you an opportunity to perfect that 1/4" seam that Kate helped you with last week. And we can talk about opening up seams (what??!!!) and trimming those versatile HST blocks.

So let's talk opening seams.  You have a choice when making a four patch style block.  You can press to one side, which is fine.  Really.  It is.  And LOTS of folks do it. OR.....you can open the seam up and really let that center lay super duper nice and flat (can you tell which way I'm leaning......???).

If you've never opened a seam before, relax.  It's easy - I promise!  You simply open up the seam ABOVE the seam allowance, on both sides.  Yes, you'll want to use your seam ripper.  Besides, your seam ripper is probably in a drawer, gathering dust, right? So show it some love and use it to get some impressively FLAT seams.

Now, if you're thinking...."WHAT???"....look at the picture above.  See where the seam ripper is pointing?  That is the tiny little seam you are taking out.  Usually about three stitches or so.  Turn the block over and do the same thing on the other side.  Then press the center open.  See how it looks like a little four patch? Cool!

Now let's talk HSTs (Half Square Triangles).  We've given you a bit of wiggle room when making these, so you'll have space to trim up your blocks to the perfect size.

Personally, I am more than obsessed with my Quilter's Magic Wand.  It makes marking any HSTs a breeze - one placement for marking both sides.  Not required - so if you don't have one, don't sweat it.  You can do the usual - mark your center line and sew 1/4" seam on each side of the line.  But if you have the Magic Wand - now is the PERFECT time to use it!

Once you've stitched, cut and pressed, it's time to trim.  What size?  Well - check your instructions.  You have two different size Milemarker blocks - 6" and 9", so the size will depend up the finished size of the block.  But use your favorite square ruler (mine is - surprise, surprise - the Tucker Trimmer) to cut your HSTs to the perfect size.

One last tip for you as you begin working on your Milemarker blocks - press well!  Well pressed blocks are more accurate and look soooooo much better.

Turnabout Patchwork - Flying Flags

I hope you've been hopping along and checking out all of the awesome projects using Teresa's fun new book!  No?  Well, lucky you - the schedule is at the bottom of this post (I know - handy, right?) and you can click away and immerse yourself in all of the lovely eye candy!

And then you'll want to make tracks for your nearest quilt shop to purchase the book - or Amazon - or Teresa's website (because we KNOW she has copies as well!).

I worked with her Flying Flags block - and I have a couple of tips for you when working with this sweet little block.

Just for fun, I played around with two different combos - low contrast HSTs (half square triangles) with high contrast strip (on the right), and high contrast HSTs with low contrast strip (on the left).  Want to guess which one turned out better (IMHO)?

I THOUGHT the low contrast HSTs would yield an interesting block....but I think the "flag" effect is lost in the low contrast version.  

See what I mean?  It gives a column effect, but my poor HSTs are lost.  You don't really see them at all!  Sob.

Contrast that (ha! Pun!!!) with the high contrast HSTs with low contrast strip - and the flags really wave, right?!  

So your takeaway?  Use high contrast fabrics when making the Flying Flags block for the best effect overall.  

No, I did not get around to making a quilt with this block.  Butttttt.....a family friend is expecting, so you never know!
