Turnabout Patchwork - Flying Flags

I hope you've been hopping along and checking out all of the awesome projects using Teresa's fun new book!  No?  Well, lucky you - the schedule is at the bottom of this post (I know - handy, right?) and you can click away and immerse yourself in all of the lovely eye candy!

And then you'll want to make tracks for your nearest quilt shop to purchase the book - or Amazon - or Teresa's website (because we KNOW she has copies as well!).

I worked with her Flying Flags block - and I have a couple of tips for you when working with this sweet little block.

Just for fun, I played around with two different combos - low contrast HSTs (half square triangles) with high contrast strip (on the right), and high contrast HSTs with low contrast strip (on the left).  Want to guess which one turned out better (IMHO)?

I THOUGHT the low contrast HSTs would yield an interesting block....but I think the "flag" effect is lost in the low contrast version.

See what I mean?  It gives a column effect, but my poor HSTs are lost.  You don't really see them at all!  Sob.

Contrast that (ha! Pun!!!) with the high contrast HSTs with low contrast strip - and the flags really wave, right?!  

So your takeaway?  Use high contrast fabrics when making the Flying Flags block for the best effect overall.  

No, I did not get around to making a quilt with this block.  Butttttt.....a family friend is expecting, so you never know!
