Welcome to the next installment of the Adventure in Color Quilt Along. This week, we are focusing on Block Two, the Eos block!
But first, let's check in on your Block One progress. How did you do? By now, you should be very comfortable with HSTs (half square triangles). That's a good thing, because HSTs appear in a lot of star blocks, including all of the Luminous Adventure in Color blocks!
Block Two
Block Two is the Eos block. As you may have noticed by now, all of the blocks are named for female goddesses. Eos is the Greek goddess of the dawn. Her colors are rose and saffron (perfect with Kate's chosen Dawn color scheme!), and she represents the hope that a new day brings.
Looking at the shape of Eos, the extended points remind me of dawn as it breaks through the veil of night and spreads light across the landscape. How perfect is that?!
Fabrics
For my version of Eos, I used the serene royal blue background (of course!), along with a deep navy, a wonderful teal, and a vibrant purple for a night time version of this daybreak block.
Tips on Block Construction
While Eos may LOOK like it is a Sawtooth star with inset corners, it is actually a "fool the eye" construction.
What this means is you get a chance to perfect your Flying Geese construction game! If you are not familiar with making Flying Geese blocks, check out my post (and Kate's of course!) on different approaches to making flying geese units. Want to win your own set of tools? Head to the bottom of the blog for a chance to win your own Wing Clipper and Magic Wand, courtesy of the fabulous folks of Studio 180!
You'll want to pull out your favorite tools - in my case, that would be my Clover chalk marker, my Studio 180 Magic Wand, and my Studio 180 Wing Clipper.
High contrast provides maximum impact when stitching up flying geese units. You'll want to have contrast between the "goose" (the main point portion of the unit) and the wings (the sides of the unit). See how the turquoise really pops against the navy in my units below?
For the best results possible, take your time. A checkpoint for perfectly sharp points - make sure the seam (the wings on the flying geese units) go EXACTLY to the corner of the unit. This will ensure that the points look PERFECT when you sew the units to other units in the block.
The stack of lovely flying geese units will make up one portion of the lovely block that is Eos.
Head over to Kate's blog to see her lovely Dawn version of the Eos block for more color inspiration.
Ready to make your own Eos blocks?
You can find the block on my website, on Kate's website, and in our Etsy shops! If you missed the earlier posts with fabric requirements, you can find that information here, as well as on the FAQ page for the Quilt Along on each of our websites!
