Congratulations! You've made it through six different blocks (ok - you've made more than six blocks, but there are six different block styles!), and now you are ready to put the whole thing together. You can do this!
You may have noticed that Luminous is NOT put together like many traditional patterns. It is NOT put together on a straight line grid.
It is NOT a straight diagonal set quilt. But don't stress! The pattern instructions will, of course, walk you through the step by step process.
And folks - step by step is EXACTLY how you should approach this. One section at a time.
Hop over to Kate's blog for some helpful hints on putting together your sections. Again, yes, you can do this. Step.by.step!
Once you get your sections together, let's look at the next steps. Here are some suggestions and hints for the final assembly of the quilt top.
- Label your setting pieces. All of them. But ESPECIALLY the QST (quarter square triangle) pieces. All of those QSTs are going to look VERY similar, and you will be happiest with your outcome if you label them. Nothing fancy - simple pieces of paper and pins will do!
- Mark the corners using the largest square ruler you have. I used my chalk fabric marker to mark my corners. Notice that the excess varies. We can't stress enough that your raw edges of your setting triangles WILL NOT match up!
- We have allowed for variance in the finished size. Careful readers will have noticed that we listed the finished size as approximate. This is why.
- Using your LONGEST ruler possible (maybe tape two long rulers together?), mark all sides. Again, I used my chalk marker to do this.
- You should mark ALL FOUR SIDES and ALL FOUR CORNERS before cutting!
- Pay careful attention to your seam allowances. Allow at least 1/4" past any star point seam intersections. You don't want to cut off a lovely star point at this stage!
- After you have carefully trimmed, you'll add the stabilizing mini borders. This will help greatly with all those edges!
You've got this! Take your time, and check, check, check your steps as you go.
Again, head over to Kate's blog for some tips for dealing with section assembly.
