Here we are - at the final, yes the final!, block! Block Six, Selene, is not only the final block, but it is by far the largest block as well! Not to worry - you've got this!
Before we explore some color options for the block, let me introduce you to the goddess Selene. She was the moon goddess of the ancient Greeks, and was the Titan personification of the moon. You may already know that the Titans were the first gods, the parents of the more familiar Greek gods we know, such as such as Zeus. She was definitely one of the more passionate goddesses as well!
Luminous Block Six

Ah, isn't she beautiful?! As I mentioned, Selene is the largest of all the blocks. Not to worry - you only need to make one! But if you fall in love with it - and I think you will - you will find that the size makes it a perfect block to use to create a pillow cover or a table topper for an awesome coordinate to go with your Luminous quilt!
A Possible Challenging Area
Of all the blocks you have made, this is by far your most challenging one! If you are going to experience any problems, it will probably be in the area (on each round) that I have circled.
My advice?
Make a sample block in some scrap fabric first.
Ensure you have an accurate 1/4" seam.
Breathe. Take your time. You've got this!
Playing with Color
While the pattern gives you definite color placement, it's always fun to look at alternative color placements to see how they affect the overall look of the block. For the options for Block Six, I've changed the background to the light blue for more contrast.
Limiting the colors to just three (background plus two star colors) gives the block a fresh, modern feel. The medium purple provides a nice contrast between the light background and the darker accent points. Fun!
Placing a bright lime contrast in just the corners pulls the eye to the corners rather than the large star points.
This is probably my favorite alternate block. I love how placing the lime not only in the corners, but also inside the star points, gives the impression of lime borders that the star points lay on top of. This is when color placement really does a lot of work for you by creating a new effect!
Wow - just look at what two almost equal value dark colors do. This makes me think of cactus - it has a definite spiny look to it!
There are a couple of fun elements going on here. The bright contrasting lime in the corners definitely draw the eye. But look at the inner flying geese units. By making that inner triangle the same color as the inner star points, you get an effect of much more complex piecing. Love it!
No matter which colors you use, or where you place them, Selene is a beautiful block, and I think you are going to love it!
