Paper piecing - if you have tried paper piecing, chances are you are in one camp - either Pro Paper Piecing or Anti Paper Piecing. Really! It is a technique that really generates strong opinions.
If you haven't experienced paper piecing, don't let the tiny pieces and multiple lines scare you. It CAN be a terrific technique for tackling odd angles and weird shapes.
A couple of years ago, Kate and I looked into paper piecing as part of our ongoing series looking at all things quilting. You can find that post here where I detail not only why I love paper piecing (most of the time!), but also provide some helpful tips on using the "postcard trick" when paper piecing for your best project ever!
So fast forward two years - how do I feel about paper piecing now? Yup - still Love/Hate. Love love love that I can create intricate patterns with tiny pieces and odd angles, and it is all possible. Still hate hate hate pulling out all those tiny pieces and dealing with the paper mess. But the love definitely outweighs the hates!
In fact, I recently created three new paper pieced patterns in my Island Batik Signature Collection, Lavender Fields. Cathedral (above), Dazzle and Tiled (below) are all paper pieced - and far easier than they may appear!
While each is done in the lovely blues and purples, each has it's own unique personality. Dazzle, above, has probably been the most popular. Maybe it is because of those dynamic diamonds that intersect the block frames.
Tiled finished up the trilogy of Lavender Fields projects - and I love love love the interesting Art Deco style diamonds that are part of the secondary design. What fun!
I mentioned complex blocks with tiny pieces - and that is Solstice. Yes, it is intricate. Yes, it has a LOT of tiny pieces. But it is also lovely and paper piecing makes it possible!
Big, small, intricate, simple - paper piecing patterns cover all of those and more. Accuracy and complexity are also some terrific side benefits of paper piecing patterns as well. I hope you'll give it a try - you just might like it!
